Borders-trained racehorse set for 2022 Randox Grand National

A borders-trained horse is one of just two entries from Scotland for the 2022 Randox Grand National on Saturday.

Ten-year-old chestnut gelding Dingo Dollar from the Sandy Thomson stables near Kelso in the Scottish Borders will be one of two runners flying the flag for Scotland in the Aintree showpiece on Saturday afternoon, the other entry from north of the border being Mighty Thunder.

The trainer’s son-in-law Ryan Mania will be in the saddle for the Grand National and he will be bidding to repeat his success of 2013 when he won the race aboard Aurora’s Encore at odds of 66/1 for Sue Smith.

Thomson is confident of Dingo Dollar’s chances in the big race, the trainer saying: “We’re really pleased with him and his preparations have gone well.

“We took him for a gallop at Kelso recently and it is all systems go for Aintree.

“He ran a great race when second in last season’s Scottish Grand National and appeared in the Grand Sefton Chase before he came to us, so we know he can handle those unique fences.”

The other Scottish contender, Mighty Thunder, is trained by Lucinda Russell in Perth & Kinross. She tasted Grand National success with One For Arthur in 2017.

She said: “It’s just so exciting to be going back to Aintree.

“Mighty Thunder won last year’s Edinburgh National and the Scottish Grand National and he’s a sweet, intelligent horse who stays very well.

“He has a relaxed way of racing and could have a good chance if he gets into a nice rhythm and the ground isn’t too soft.”

Dingo Dollar is currently a 66/1 shot in the 2022 Grand National while Mighty Thunder can be backed at best odds of 40/1.
