The Grand National rarely fails to live up to expectations and this year’s renewal was no exception with overwhelming favourite Tiger Roll earning for himself a place in the record books by becoming the first runner since Red Rum in 1974 to win the race in successive years.
The Gordon Elliott-trained horse looked in better form than ever following wins in the Boyne Hurdle and Cross Country Chase beforehand – the latter being his fourth win at the Cheltenham Festival – and jockey Davy Russell had the nine-year-old 4/1 favourite well positioned from start to finish as he found plenty remaining in the long run-in to keep him clear of second-placed 66/1 shot Magic Of Light.
8/1 Rathvinden followed in third with 25/1 Walk In The Mill finishing in fourth position.
Ruby Walsh was well positioned throughout as he aimed Rathvinden towards the line alongside fellow frontrunner Pleasant Company, however Tiger Roll was ever-present in the slipstream of the leading pair and it was obvious in the run-in to the final fence that he would be the one to beat once again, Russell keeping his cool and steering him to a historic victory.
Magic Of Light chased him all the way to the finishing line but the mare was well beaten and had to settle for second place.
