Grand National 2021: Runners stand their ground and Secret Reprieve misses out

Grand National 2021

Secret Reprieve was thoroughly impressive in his Welsh Grand National win three months ago at Chepstow and he was fancied to give a decent account of himself in the Aintree showpiece on Saturday afternoon, however he has missed today’s deadline to get a run and as such he won’t be lining up in the famous steeplechase.

The Evan Williams-trained runner bolted up in the Welsh National in January and he was a major fancy for the Aintree contest for which he was a general price of 12/1. Nevertheless the lightly-raced runner was too low in the handicap in order to make the cut for the National and he needed other horses to defect from the big race to take his place in the starting line-up.

In general, connections had been pretty relaxed and unconcerned about this situation and this was still the case following the declaration stage on Thursday morning when the final 40 runners were concerned.

Some Neck was named as first reserve at a general 33/1 while Secret Reprieve was second reserve. These two runners had until 1pm today for another other entries to be withdrawn, however this deadline has now passed and there are no absentees.

Should there be any horses withdrawn from the Grand National between now and 5:15 on Saturday afternoon, none of the reserves will be allowed to step in.

Third and fourth reserves were Kauto Riko and Fagan respectively.
