Grand National 2021: Watering continuing at Aintree ahead of three-day meeting
Watering has been continuing at the famous Aintree Racecourse ahead of the three-day Grand National meeting which gets underway tomorrow afternoon. The weather has generally been dry in the build-up to the festival and this will again be the case in the next few hours, therefore extra moisture has been required in order to keep the track in a suitable state ahead of the meeting.
The going on the Randox Grand National course is described as good to soft while the Hurdle and Mildmay tracks and good to soft – soft in places.
Over the course of Wednesday and Thursday last week, approximately ten millimetres of irrigation was applied to the latter two courses and the Grand national turf received six millimetres. The Hurdle and Mildmay courses received a further five millimetres on Monday and another six millimetres was applied to the National track. More watering was needed on Tuesday and another few millimetres may be applied over the next few hours.
Sulekha Varma, clerk of the course at Aintree, said: “Aintree is looking in great shape on the eve of the Randox Grand National Festival.
“Watering is continuing on the Mildmay and Hurdle Courses and we will assess later today whether the Grand National Course requires any additional watering.”
The current weather forecast predicts that conditions will generally be cold with morning frosts. Overnight showers are possible in the early hours of Thursday morning although these will be light should they occur. Cloudy conditions will prevail on Friday and Saturday will the odds chance of some sleety showers during the day on Grand National afternoon.
