Grand National 2022: Highland Hunter ruled out of race

Paul Nicholls is to be without any runners in the 2022 Randox Grand National after Highland Hunter was withdrawn from the contest after suffering a leg injury.

The Grand National 2022 is fast approaching and trainer Paul Nicholls will be without an entry due to Highland Hunter being druled out of the famous steeplechase due to a leg injury. The nine-year-old was a general 40/1 shot in the race and was in 28th position in the latest entry list for the Aintree marathon.

The Thomas Barr-owned runner finished second in this season’s Welsh National and his absence in the Aintree contest will be a massive blow for Nicholls as he bids for a 13th trainers’ championship. Nicholls had less runners at the 2022 Cheltenham Festival than Willie Mullins had winners and he had been focusing firmly on the Randox Grand National Festival.

Aside the National itself, Nicholls has plenty of other runners at Aintree between 7th and 9th April and he will be hoping that thew weather remains dry between now and the start of the Festival.

He said: “We’ve got loads to run at Aintree and all those ones who didn’t run at Cheltenham – McFabulous, Thyme Whyte, Bravemansgame, Simply The Betts, Saint Calvados – will all go there and a dry fortnight will suit them.

“I took them out because of the ground and all they would have had at Cheltenham is hard races for nothing. If the ground is wrong for the horse you’ve got, you don’t run. We’ll wait for another day and all the horses are fine.”
