Lake View Lad will carry top weight in 2021 Scottish National

Nick Alexander’s Lake View Lad only made it as far as the first fence in the Aintree Grand National on Saturday afternoon, however he will look to make amends in the Scottish equivalent this coming weekend. The grey will top the weights in the 31-strong field at 11st 12lb, slightly ahead of consistent contender and favourite Aye Right in a contest which looks set to feature a solid challenge from the home nation.

The most notable absentee following Monday’s confirmations is well-fancied Galvin, Ian Ferguson deciding against sending the Cheltenham festival winner out again this season.

Amongst the other possibles, Takingrisks will aim to retain the crown which hew claimed in the last Scottish National two years ago, the Nicky Richards veteran having been pulled up at Aintree on Saturday. Sue Smith’s Cheltenham hero Vintage Clouds will don the Trevor Hemmings colours as he attempts to add another victory to his name.

Other contenders who catch the eye include the Paul Nicholls trio of Highland Hunter, Truckers Lodge and Soldier Of Love as well as Alan King’s Notachance and Brian Ellison’s Sam’s Adventure.

Lucinda Russell is surely overdue some success at this venue and her hopes lie with Mighty Thunder, the more likely contender from her duo which also includes Big River.

She said: “Both Mighty Thunder and Big River are in there.

“Big River needs soft ground, so we’d have to have a wet end to the week (for him to run).

“Mighty Thunder is in very good form and has come out of his Uttoxeter race very well, and I think he’s suited by these marathon trips.

“We’re just getting excited now. We’ve got a week to get him right for Sunday.”
