Mighty Thunder wins the 2021 Scottish Grand National

Mighty Thunder wins the 2021 Coral Scottish Grand National

The 2021 Scottish Grand National was always going to be an extremely open contest and so it proved as 8/1 Mighty Thunder edged his way to victory under pressure from Mister Fogpatches and favourite Dingo Dollar in what was a thoroughly exciting contest. Grade One winner at Aintree, trainer Lucinda Russell once again struck gold and ensured that the trophy would stay north of the border for the next twelve months.

As far as jockey Tom Scudamore was concerned, this win will have compensated for his disappointment in the Aintree Grand National when he pulled up favourite Cloth Cap just four fences from the end, however regular jockey on Mighty Thunder, Blair Campbell, will have mixed emotions having missed out on the ride due to an injury sustained at Kelso last month.

Mighty Thunder landed the longest chase in Scotland, the Edinburgh National, two months ago under Campbell who had partnered the eight-year-old in all-but-five of his 25 starts including all seven victories, up until this afternoon’s triumph at Ayr.

Nevertheless this was Tom Scudamore’s win and a well deserved one at that.
