Scottish National favourite Galvin ruled out of race

Cheltenham Festival 2021 winner Galvin, ante-post favourite for the Scottish Grand National this weekend, has now been pulled out of the Sunday afternoon feature race at Ayr Racecourse, trainer Ian Ferguson deciding against another outing this season for the National Hunt chase hero.

The seven-year-old, which provided connections with an excellent win at the Cheltenham festival last month, was firm favourite to win the rearranged Grade 3 Scottish National on Sunday afternoon at general odds of 9/2.

Ferguson, who took charge of Galvin after previous trainer Gordon Elliott was suspended, said: “Once we decided to miss the Irish Grand National, we felt we’d give Ayr a miss too. He’s a sound horse and has taken his racing well, but he seems to appreciate a break between his races. His best form is when he’s fresh.”

He added: “Galvin has had a fantastic time of things and has been very well placed. He came out of Cheltenham healthy and well but he’s been roughed off for a break.”

The Ronnie Bartlett-owned chaser appeared to have a strong claim for continuing what has been an utterly dominant spell for Irish-trained runners in the UK recently and Denise Foster-trained Escaria Ten was another notable absentee from the 31 confirmations on Monday. The remaining Irish entries include Mister Fogpatches and Eurobot.

The 2021 Scottish National takes place on Sunday, 18th April 2021 with a scheduled start time of 3:35 pm. The distance of the Grade 3 race is approximately 4 miles.
