Secret Reprieve still not guaranteed Grand National run on April 10th

Welsh Grand National winner Secret Reprieve is now just three places away from a guaranteed start in the Randox Grand National on Saturday afternoon following the latest forfeit stage on Monday. The maximum permitted field of 40 runners will be confirmed on Thursday and we moved closer to this stage when the number of entries was reduced from 77 to 68 earlier this week. On the back of this, Secret Reprieve has moved up from 50 to 43.

Available at best odds of 14/1 before the most recent forfeit stage, the Evan Williams-trained runner is rated exactly the same as Some Neck at 10st 1lb and Martin Greenwood (BHA senior handicapper) will make an announcement later this week with regard to the procedures for making a decision on which runners will start the race on Saturday should there be a tiebreak.

With Adam Wedge losing his battle to be fully fit in time for the Grand National, James Bowen has now been booked to ride Secret reprieve in the famous steeplechase.

Trainer Evan Williams said:

“I’d much prefer to be sweating to get in off a low weight than knowing we were going to get a run with 11st 7lb on our back.

“If we get in that will be lovely and if we don’t that’ll be lovely too. We’re very cool about it and it’s out of our hands.

“I understand if people above us want to run and I have no issues with that whatsoever. Thursday morning we’ll know our fate and we’ll take our medicine either way.”
