Tiger Roll will miss 2022 Randox Grand National following weight allocation

Tiger Roll owner Michael O’Leary has ruled the two-time Grand National winner out of this year’s contest, the Ryanair boss claiming that the allocated weight is “absurd”.

The winner of the 2018 and 2019 Grand Nationals had been handed a weight of 11st 4lb, the same as 2021 winner Minella Times and 6lb less than Conflated and Galvin. Following the revealing of the weights, Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary said it was a “ridiculous” rating and the likelihood is that the horse will be retired after appearing at Cheltenham next month where he will bid for a sixth festival win.

O’Leary said: “We don’t believe it is fair or safe to ask him to carry close to top weight at the age of 12.

“Since we are responsible for the welfare of Tiger Roll, we must protect him from the idiotic opinion of this handicapper

“We therefore regret to announce that he will not run in this year’s Aintree Grand National.

“Instead Tiger Roll will be trained for the Cross Country race in Cheltenham, and there is every likelihood that win, lose or draw, this will be his last racecourse appearance.”

Handicapper Martin Greenwood was of the opposite opinion and claimed he had relented by dropping the rating of Tiger Roll.

He said: “As I keep telling people, you can’t just ignore his win in the Cross Country at Cheltenham last season which was less than 12 months ago when he easily defeated two good horses in Easysland and Some Neck.”

Initially trainer Gordon Elliott had seemed more than happy with Tiger Roll’s weight allocation and he claimed that a Grand National appearance could be on the agenda, prior to O’Leary’s intervention.

O’Leary stated that Tiger Roll could be given 4lb more than three years ago should the weights be increased due to stablemates Conflated and Galvin not running.

Tiger Roll won the Grand National in 2018 carrying 10st 13lb and he repeated this feat twelve months later with an allocation of 11st 5lb.
