2024 Grand National could feature just seven British contenders
There is every possibility that a mere seven British horses may be involved in the 2024 Grand National on Saturday, 13th April.
Lowest ever number
2023 Grand National winner Corach Rambler and Welsh National victor Nassalam are the only British entries amongst the top twelve rated runners in the 2024 contest. Should there be seven British runners contesting the race, this would represent the lowest ever number of British entries for what is the biggest race in the UK.
Domestic interest reduced
The 2023 renewal featured just thirteen British runners, however with future Grand Nationals set to involve a maximum of 34 runners (down from 40) on welfare grounds, there is a likelihood that domestic interest will be reduced even further on the back of the weights confirmation earlier this week. Of the top 34 runners in the list, only seven are trained on this side of the Irish Sea and of these, three are as yet not guaranteed to run, these being Le Milos, Dusart and Threeunderthrufive.
Final declaration stage
Ireland was represented by 27 runners in the 2023 Grand National and the likelihood is that the same number will appear at the Aintree showpiece twelve months later. Many horses will drop out between now and the final declaration stage which takes place 48 hours before the contest but the indications are that this will be the lowest number of British entries in the history of the contest.
