Five-day confirmation stages whittles Grand National contenders down to 50
The likelihood is that a full field will be contesting the 2023 Grand National after a total of 50 runners remained in contention for the famous steeplechase at the five-day confirmation stage on Monday, however the lack of scratchings has meant that Evan Williams’ Secret Reprieve will once again miss out on the big race.
Seven runners were scratched for the 2023 Grand National, namely Captain Kangaroo, Quick Wave, Battleoverdoyen, Gin On Lime, The Shunter, Envoi Allen and Royal Pagaille. This means that Back On The Lash, Fortescue, Francky Du Berlais, Dunboyne and Our Power are guaranteed to contest the £1 million steeplechase on Saturday afternoon.
Three-time Grand National winning trainer Gordon Elliott (Silver Birch 2007, Tiger Roll 2018 and 2019) stated that his intention was to run six horses in the race, however thus far he still has twelve in contention with a number close to the cut-off point for the 40-strong field.
Elliott’s Defi Bleu currently sits at number 40 but made an appearance in the Irish Grand National two days ago. Gevrey, Punitive and Milan Native are numbered 41, 42 and 43 respectively and they also took part in the Fairyhouse contest on Monday.
Paul Gilligan inmate Born By The Sea comes in at 44, while Elliott has Fakiera and Mortal at 45 and 46 respectively.
