Gordon Elliott could aim eight or ten at the 2024 Grand National

Gordon Elliott outlined his intention to have anywhere between eight and ten runners at this year’s Grand National when the weights for the contest were announced earlier this week.

Best chance of success

There’s every chance that Irish handler Gordon Elliott will have at least eight horses in the 2024 Grand National on 13th April, however the trainer highlighted a runner who went out at the first in 2023 but could potentially give him his best chance of success this time around. Elliott made a record 26 entries at this stage of proceedings and he will be aiming to match the likes of Ginger McCain, Fred Rimell and George Dockeray by claiming the prize for a fourth time.

Reduced safety limit

A total of eight of Elliott’s qualified 23 entries have made the top 34 for a contest in which the safety limit has been reduced by six from the usual forty runners. Of this selection, the handler has nominated Galvin as being his best hope for emulating past winners for the stable such as Silver Birch (2007) and Tiger Roll (2018 and 2019).

Greatest race in the world

Elliott said: “We’ve got a great bunch of horses. It’s the greatest race in the world, if you’re not in you can’t win and we’ll probably end up running eight or ten horses.

Galvin has been handed a mark which is 3lb lower than in 2023. The handler added: “I think Galvin looks well in. He’s below 11st. He went at the first last year but he’s only been trained with two races in mind this season, the cross-country race at Cheltenham and the English Grand National. I like him with 10st 12lb.”
