2018 Grand National Winner

Tiger Roll

The 2018 Randox Health Grand National was the 171st running of the world-famous steeplechase and the 2018 Grand National winner was Gordon Elliott-trained 10/1 shot Tiger Roll, ridden by Davy Russell. 38 runners took part in the race and all returned safely to the stables following the race, Walk In The Mill and Regal Encore being withdrawn from contention on the morning of the race.

Three female jockeys participated in the race, the first time that this had occurred in 30 years. Katie Walsh was on Bail Des Iles in her sixth Grand National while Bryony Frost and Rachael Blackmore each took part for the first time on Milansbar and Alpha Des Obeaux respectively.

An initial 105 entries were received for the 2018 Randox Health Grand National with the final 40 being declared on April 13th 2018. On the morning of the race, Walk In The Mill and Regal Encore were withdrawn, leaving 38 runners to take part, the smallest field since the 1999 Grand National.

Once again there were no fatalities in the Grand National, this being as a direct result of changes made to the fences some years earlier. Saint Are needed treatment by veterinarians after falling at the Chair, the highest fence on the course, and a few days later it was announced that the runner was to be retired from racing.

TV coverage was provided by ITV and was co-anchored by Francesca Cumani and Ed Chamberlin. The commentary team was Richard Hoiles, Ian Bartlett and Mark Johnson.

Once again the Grand National was a complete sell-out with Aintree racecourse packed to the rafters. Over 75,000 spectators crammed through the turnstiles for the third and final day of the Grand National meeting and they were treated to some top-quality racing throughout the afternoon, the Grand National itself taking place at 5:15pm.

In the Grand National itself, Tiger Roll and Pleasant Company were both involved in a photo finish after the latter had surged towards Tiger Roll in the final hundred yards or so, however the Gordon Elliott runner was judged to have been just in front at the finishing line.
