Rank outsider Freewheelin Dylan, ridden by Ricky Doyle, saw off a number of challengers to land the Irish Grand National in dramatic fashion this afternoon.
Freewheelin Dylan wins Irish Grand National at 150/1
Huge outsider Freewheelin Dylan put in a thrilling and hugely impressive front-running performance to triumph in the Irish Grand National at a massive 150/1, the nine-year-old answering every call from jockey Ricky Doyle and successfully fighting off several challengers on the final straight. The gelding sported cheekpieces for the very first time and these worked perfectly as the Dermot McLoughlin-trained runner bravely saw off a determined challenge from 9/1 shot Run Wild Fred.
Enjoy D’Allen finished third at odds of 40/1 while 9/2 favourite Latest Exhibition completed the first four at 9/2, the latter going into this race on the back of three consecutive second-placed finishes.
This was always going to be a hugely competitive race and many eyes were on Rachael Blackmore who was riding fancied Robin De Carlow. Nevertheless in what was a very tightly packed field, Freewheeling Dylan kept the pace for most of the race and while the likelihood was always going to be that he would be picked off by some of the favourites, there was no stopping the 150/1 shot. Indeed far from fading along the final stretch as one would perhaps expect, he went from strength to strength as he successfully held off a strong challenge.
This was an unbelievable result and there will doubtless have been many punters out there wishing that they had had a shot at this one.
