Rachael Blackmore wins BBC World Sports Star Award

Having made history at Cheltenham and Aintree earlier this year, Rachael Blackmore has been no stranger to receiving awards and she claimed another accolade this week when she was named BBC World Sports Star in Salford.

The 32-year-old became the first ever female to be crowned top jockey at the Cheltenham Festival in March 2021 and she followed this up by making history once again when winning the Grand National aboard Minella Times, also becoming the first female jockey to triumph in the famous steeplechase.

Blackmore enjoyed a tremendous 2021 with no less than six wins in the Cheltenham Festival including successes on Allaho in the Ryanair Chase and Honeysuckle in the Champion Hurdle. This BBC award was just the latest in a string of accolades which include being named asIrish Times Sportswoman of the Year and RTE Sportswoman of the Year.

Other nominees for the coveted award included Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah, F1 World Champion Max Verstappen and Tennis sensation Novak Djokovic. The 2020 award was won by UFC superstar Khabib Nurmagomedov and fellow rider Hollie Doyle came third in the main prize which was won by F1 star Lews Hamilton.
