2022 Coral Scottish Grand National Tips and Best Bets
There’s a big day on the horse racing front this coming weekend with the 2022 Coral Scottish Grand National the highlight on the Ayr card on Saturday afternoon. This 4m contest will get underway as planned at 3:35pm and if the latest betting is anything to go by, Kitty’s Light will be the one to beat. We assess the chances of the Christian Williams-trained runner and give you our Scottish National tips ahead of the big race.
Kitty’s Light has been been figuring well in the betting for the Scottish Grand National in recent weeks although with just a single favourite claiming the prize in the last 18 runnings of this race and all-but-two of these being aged 8 or over, the trend is very much against the six-year-old. There are many positives in his favour, the most notable one of these being that he does have time in his side. Also he finished a decent second in the Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown last season over a distance of 3m 6f. As such he should have no issues with the four-mile trip on Saturday afternoon. He is certainly a worthy contender for the Scottish National but he represents little value in the market for this tough contest.
Peter Fahey is sending two big chances across from the Emerald Isle in the form of History Of Fashion and Stormy Judge. Both of these are worthy of attention, especially the latter which will be ridden by Danny Mullins. Phillip Enright will take the reins on the former and with 10st 9lb he gets in with a decent weight.
Course winners in the final line-up are One More Fleurie, Streets Of Doyen and Strong Economy, while Cool Mix finished fifth in the 2021 Scottish Grand National.
Christian Williams will also aim Win My Wings into the race and he seems to have a decent chance here too. The distance will suit him fine, his last outing being the Eider Chase at Newcastle over a distance of 4m 1f. He has more on his plate here with a burden of an additional 8lbs but connections have opted to book jockey Rob James and thus claim 7lbs here. This will be of assistance but the very fact that they are doing this may suggest that the allocated weight is of concern.
Other notable contenders here include Major Dundee, Ask A Honey Bee, The Wolf and Ashton Lad, the latter trained by Danny Skelton who has a 38% record with chasers at this venue. Nevertheless we’ll be siding with three runners , two of which performed well in this contest in 2021, namely Fantastikas (12/1), The Ferry Master (10/1) and Cool Mix (14/1).
Fantastikas halved in price to just 12/1 following the confirmations on Monday and having finished seventh in the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival last month on good to soft, he will relish the conditions at Ayr which are expected to be the same on Saturday afternoon. If conditions are suitable (which we expect them to be), then this is a serious contender.
The Ferry Master finished fourth in this race last year, however he will be on a 5lb lower mark this time around. Since his last run he has received a wind op and he will likely be all the better for his last outing as it came at the end of a two-month break.
Cool Mix finished fifth in last year’s Scottish Grand National and he too will return on a lower mark by 6lbs. This is a proven course winner but he will be with a tongue-tie for the first time and connections have decided upon claiming jockey Alan Doyle who can haul back a further 7lbs. As such he will actually be a whopping 12lbs lower than when losing by 8 1/4 lengths in the 2021 Scottish National.
