The highly anticipated 2025 Randox Grand National is set to unfold at Aintree on Saturday, with I Am Maximus aiming to secure a second consecutive victory in the iconic race. The final declarations for the race have been confirmed, with 34 runners now officially in the field. Notably, Gordon Elliott’s Duffle Coat completes the list, securing the final spot in the prestigious event.

Four reserves have been nominated in the list of Grand National runners, should any non-runners emerge before the race. These reserves are: Harry Redknapp’s Shakem Up’Arry, the seasoned Roi Mage, Favori De Champdou, and Fantastic Lady. The deadline for replacing any declared runners with these reserves is 1pm on Friday, the day before the Grand National.

I Am Maximus’s potential victory would see its owner, JP McManus, claim a fourth Grand National win, making him the most successful owner in the history of the race. Alongside last year’s champion, McManus has four other contenders in the field, including notable horses Iroko and Perceval Legallois, both considered leading contenders. Meetingofthewaters, who finished seventh last year, and Chantry House round out McManus’s formidable team.

Trainer Gavin Cromwell enters the race with a strong hand, looking to add a Grand National victory to his already impressive season, which included a Gold Cup triumph. Cromwell’s trio of runners includes Perceval Legallois, Stumptown (who claimed the Cross Country Chase), and Vanillier, who finished second in the 2023 Grand National.

Shark Hanlon, trainer of Hewick, has hinted that his horse may well go off as the favourite, given the public support for the 2023 King George VI Chase winner. Hewick has a great chance to make history, and jockey Gavin Sheehan will ride for the first time since their famous Kempton triumph, aboard a horse that cost just €850. Intense Raffles, last season’s Irish Grand National winner, had been the ante-post favourite until recently, adding further intrigue to the field.

Irish training giants Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott, and Henry de Bromhead are responsible for a combined 13 of the 34 runners in the race. Mullins will have six horses in the Grand National, including Nick Rockett (ridden by Patrick Mullins), Grangeclare West (Brian Hayes), Appreciate It (Sean O’Keeffe), and Minella Cocooner (Johnny Burke), alongside I Am Maximus (Paul Townend) and Meetingofthewaters (Danny Mullins). Elliott’s five runners include Conflated, Fil Dor, Coko Beach, Three Card Brag, and Duffle Coat.

De Bromhead, who triumphed in the 2021 Grand National with Minella Times and Rachael Blackmore, will rely on Minella Indo (who finished third last year) and Senior Chief (ridden by Darragh O’Keeffe) to represent his yard this time.

In Britain, leading trainer Dan Skelton will not have a runner in the race, but his main title rivals, Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson, are both well represented. Nicholls has a strong squad of five, including Kandoo Kid, the Coral Gold Cup winner, who will be ridden by champion jockey Harry Cobden. Meanwhile, Henderson, still seeking his first Grand National win, will have Hyland (ridden by Nico de Boinville) and Chantry House in the race.
