Grand National Festival: Two Cumbrian-trained horses to take part
Nicky Richards is hopeful that two of his runners can make their mark in the 2021 Grand National Festival, the Greystoke-based trainer planning to run Takingrisks and Looking Well at the three-day Festival which gets underway tomorrow afternoon and culminates in the famous Grand National on Saturday.
Richards said: “Aintree is completely different to anywhere else. They will both need luck in running.”
The Greystoke yard has erected Grand National style fences in order to give both runners something of a feel for the sort of obstacles they will be up against this week, however these were due to be disassembled today.
Looking Well has been declared for the Foxhunters Chase which takes place on Day One of the three-day meeting. This is one of the three contests which take place over the famous National fences at Aintree, however the Foxhunters is a mile shorter than the feature race and is open to amateur riders only. Cork-based jockey John Barry will take the reins, the leading point-to-point rider having ridden several high-class runners including Minella Indo, winner of the 2021 Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Takingrisks will be aiming to become the first 12-year-old to win the Grand National since Amberleigh House back in 2004. Owned by Frank Bird, Takingrisks triumphed in the 2019 Scottish National before landing the Sky Bet Handicap Chase at Doncaster at 40/1 in January. He will once again be partnered by Sean Quinlan.
