Grand National going now ‘Good to Soft’ after 7.5 mm of rain falls overnight

The ground at Aintree Racecourse has been changed to ‘good to soft’ following 7.5mm of rainfall on Sunday evening/Monday morning.

The updated going has been applied to all courses at Aintree Racecourse with the course for the Randox Grand National changing from ‘good to soft, good in places’ and the Mildmay changing from ‘good, good to soft in places’.

Sulekha Varma, Clerk of the Course, was happy with the current rainy conditions. She said: “We got a helpful 7.5mm of rain last night, which was very welcome after such a long dry period, and that has put us to good to soft on all three courses. It’s a nice place to be at this point of the week and we’re in a good place from a natural point of view.

“It’s forecast to be dry and cloudy today with a bit more rain coming tonight, with showers through Wednesday as well. At the moment, Thursday, Friday and Saturday are looking mostly dry with a few wintry showers on Friday and Saturday.”

Due to uncertainty regarding the weather, officials decided against watering any more after 5mm was applied during Friday and Saturday.

Varma continued: “The forecast has been so changeable we’ll have to keep an eye on things, but as it stands based on the forecast, I would hope we don’t need to do any more watering before the start of racing.

“We’ll see how we go through racing, we can always water overnight if we need to.”
