Tiger Roll not to be aimed at Aintree as Grand National weights announced
Two-time Grand National winner Tiger Roll won’t now be aimed at the famous steeplechase on 9th April with owner Michael O’Leary claiming that his allocated weights is absurd.
2018 and 2019 Grand National winner Tiger Roll had been allocated a weight of 11st 4lb, the same as 2021 winner Minella Times and some 6lb below top-weight Galvin and Conflated.
Tiger Roll is being aimed for a sixth win at the Cheltenham Festival next month and the Grand National weights announcement means that he won’t now be given a tilt at Aintree on April 9th. Tiger Roll became the only runner after Red Rum to manage back-to-back wins in the famous steeplechase, however he was denied a chance to make it three wins on the bounce when the 2020 renewal was cancelled due to Covid and he was pulled out from the 2021 contest due to the owners alleging that his weight of 11st 9lb was unfair.
Ryanair boss O’Leary was furious with the “ridiculous” rating. He said:
“We don’t believe it is fair or safe to ask him to carry close to top weight at the age of 12.
“Since we are responsible for the welfare of Tiger Roll, we must protect him from the idiotic opinion of this handicapper
“We therefore regret to announce that he will not run in this year’s Aintree Grand National.
“Instead Tiger Roll will be trained for the Cross Country race in Cheltenham, and there is every likelihood that win, lose or draw, this will be his last racecourse appearance”.
