Hewick handed top weight in the 2024 Grand National
Jon Hanlon-trained Hewick has been handed top weight in the 2024 Grand National as the handler aims for an historic hat-trick for the King George VI victor.
As winner of the King George VI chase and one of the favourites for the upcoming Cheltenham Gold Cup, Hewick has been given a weight of 11st 12lb for the Grand National on Saturday, 13th April. He leads a total of 87 entries for the mammoth contest on Merseyside in a little over seven weeks’ time.
Hewick has been very much a bargain buy, the horse returning wins in the Bet365 Gold Cup, American Grand National and Galway Plate despite being bought for a mere £800.
2023 Grand National winner Corach Rambler has been given a weight of 11st 2lb after triumphing with 10st 5lb last year, while second-placed Vanillier will go off at 2lb more than the 10st 8lb that he carried in 2023.
Gordon Elliott has several entries aimed at the 2024 Grand National and the biggest weight amongst these goes to Conflated which is second in the handicap with 11st 9lb, while 2022 National winner Noble Yeats is slightly lower at 11st 8lb.
One of the current favourites for the 2024 contest is Monbeg Genius who has been handed a weight of 10st 4lb, one of six entries given this burden.
