I Am Maximus heads weights for the 2025 Grand National
2024 Grand National hero I Am Maximus has been handed top weights for the 2025 renewal of the famous steeplechase on Saturday, 5th April.
I Am Maximus has been allocated top weight for the 2025 renewal of the Grand National, the Wullie Mullins inmate triumphing by seven and a half lengths in the 2024 edition of the world famous contest, ahead of runner-up Delta Work, third-placed Minella Indo and fourth-placed Galvin. Mullins has stated that it will be a very tough task to repeat that feat in 2025 with a weight of 11st 12lb. No top weight contender has triumphed in the Grand National since Red Rum over fifty years ago (1974).
Mullins said: “It’s top weight and it’s tough, but we had an idea that it would be tough.
“It was huge to win it last year for the second time. I felt very spoilt winning a second Grand National.”
Second in the weights goes to Venetia Williams-trained Royale Pagaille with 11st 9lb, while stablemate L’Homme Presse has been burdened with one pound less alongside Henry de Bromhead’s Envoi Allen and Mullins duo Nick Rockett and Grangeclare West.
Despite receiving top weight earlier today, I Am Maximus is joint-favourite with the leading UK bookmakers to win the 2025 Grand National, alongside Gavin Cromwell inmate Inothewayurthinkin (11st 5lb) at 10/1 apiece. Of the placed runners in 2024, Delta Work has been handed a weight of 11st 2lb, Minella Indo 11st 3lb and Galvin 10st 13lb.
