Michelle Mone’s Monbeg Genius set to line up in 2024 Grand National

Monbeg Genius is one of the favourites amongst the Grand National runners to win the 2024 renewal on 13th April, however the Racing Post says that victory could cause ‘significant damage to racing’.

PPE scandal

Monbeg Genius is one of the favourites to triumph in the 2024 renewal of the Grand National, however the runner is at the heart of the PPE scandal surrounding owners Michelle Mone and husband Doug Barrowman. Trainer Jonjo O’Neil stated on Tuesday that the horse is set to have his prep run for the Grand National at Kelso early in March.

Boisterous crowd

It remains to be seen whether either of the owners will be at the Grand National to see the horse contest the famous steeplechase, however it is clear that the reception of what is always a boisterous crowd to a win for a horse with these sort of connections could easily be negative.

Damage to racing

On Tuesday, the Racing Post ran a column headlined “Let’s just hope he doesn’t win”, the paper arguing the case that victory for the runner could easily cause damage to the racing industry. Jonjo O’Neill declined to make any comments regarding the owners, the trainer simply saying: “I am getting on with my job and I will train the horse to the best of my ability.”

Bribery and fraud

A restraint order placed on Mone and Barrowman’s assets doesn’t affect the eight-year-old which is official owned by Barrowman Racing Ltd. The couple are alleged to have been involved in bribery and fraud after securing government contracts worth an estimated £200 million for the PPE Medro company. They both admit having involvement in the company but continue to deny any claims of wrongdoing.
