Minella Trump on course to contest 2023 Randox Grand National
Donald McCain-trained Minella Trump is very much on course to make an appearance in the 2023 Randox Grand National on Saturday 15th April some fifty years after the handler’s father took Red Rum to his first National victory.
Ginger McCain steered the famous Red Rum to three Grand National wins and his son Donald will be bidding for success in the 2023 renewal with Minella Trump who emerged unscathed from his first appearance in close to 300 days. The horse’s presence in the starting line-up for the Grand National on Saturday, 15th April will be highly appropriate given that the famous Red Rum, trained by Ginger McCain, won for the first time in the Grand National exactly 50 years ago.
Nevertheless, while Minella Trump will be amongst the contenders for the gruelling Aintree marathon, there are fears that the British representation in the 40-strong field could be in single figures as the Irish looks set to have over 30 runners for the big race.
McCain, who claimed a Grand National victory back in 2011 with Ballabriggs, said: “We needed to get a blow into Minella Trump and a two-and-a-half-mile handicap hurdle wouldn’t play to his strengths plus it was a good little race. He is fine today and it will be the National next for him.”
