Mr Vango Triumphs in the 2025 Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter

The Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter, one of the premier long-distance handicap chases in the UK, once again lived up to its reputation on Saturday, 15th March 2025.

A gruelling test of stamina over 4 miles and 2 furlongs, this year’s race was a spectacle of endurance, tactics, and determination, ultimately won by Mr Vango at odds of 11/1, trained by Mrs Sara Bradstock and expertly ridden by Jack Tudor.

The Build-Up and the Field

The Midlands Grand National has long been a prestigious contest, often attracting talented staying chasers with ambitions of tackling races like the Scottish Grand National or even the Aintree Grand National in subsequent outings. This year’s renewal featured a competitive field, with notable entries including Knockanore, the 4/1 favourite trained by Ryan Potter, and Fortunedefortunata, an emerging talent from Gordon Elliott’s stable.

Among the challengers were also Tanganyika (14/1), trained by Venetia Williams and partnered by Charlie Deutsch; Passing Well (11/1), representing Jamie Snowden’s yard with Gavin Sheehan in the saddle; and My Silver Lining (22/1), trained by Emma Lavelle and ridden by James Best.

The field also included the Irish-trained Bodhisattva (14/1), with Callum Pritchard aboard, looking to make an impact for John C McConnell.

How the Race Unfolded

From the outset, the contest was fiercely competitive, with several runners eager to take up a forward position. Mr Vango, well-regarded for his tenacity and proven stamina, adopted a prominent role early on, ensuring he was in the best position to dictate the race.

As the race progressed, the relentless pace began to take its toll on some of the challengers. Knockanore, the favourite, ran prominently for much of the contest but struggled to maintain his position as the field approached the final mile.

With four fences remaining, a thrilling battle ensued between Mr Vango and Tanganyika. The Venetia Williams-trained challenger looked poised to strike as he loomed large on the outside. For a moment, it seemed as though he might snatch victory, but Mr Vango, showcasing remarkable resilience, dug deep to fend off the challenge.

Passing Well made a strong late bid for a place, staying on well to secure third. My Silver Lining, a consistent performer in staying handicaps, finished fourth, followed by Fortunedefortunata in fifth. Knockanore, despite being the pre-race favourite, faded late on to finish sixth.

A Triumph for Sara Bradstock and Jack Tudor

For trainer Mrs Sara Bradstock, this victory was a significant milestone. Known for her expertise in preparing staying chasers, she has nurtured Mr Vango into a formidable long-distance performer. The gelding had shown his class earlier in the season with victories in the London National and the Peter Marsh Chase, but this Midlands Grand National win was arguably his finest moment.

Jack Tudor, an emerging talent among jump jockeys, delivered a masterful ride. His tactical nous and composure under pressure ensured that Mr Vango had enough left in the tank to repel all challengers in the closing stages. Tudor’s ability to judge pace and keep his mount balanced over the demanding 4m 2f trip was instrumental in securing victory.

Post-Race Reactions and Future Plans

After the race, a delighted Jack Tudor spoke about the race’s demanding nature and Mr Vango’s determined performance:

“He’s an incredible horse. He gives his all, and today he really showed his class. When Tanganyika came upsides, I knew we had a real battle on our hands, but he found another gear and kept pulling out more. Credit to Sara and the team for having him in such great shape.”
Trainer Sara Bradstock echoed similar sentiments:

“We’ve always believed in Mr Vango. He’s tough, he stays, and he loves a battle. This race was always the plan, and it’s fantastic to see him deliver on the big stage.”

As for what’s next, connections suggested that a tilt at the Scottish Grand National at Ayr in April could be on the cards. Given his proven stamina and tenacious attitude, Mr Vango could well be a force to reckon with in future long-distance chases.

How the Other Contenders Fared

Tanganyika lost nothing in defeat, running a gallant race to finish second. His trainer, Venetia Williams, was pleased with his effort and hinted at a potential bid for the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown next month.

Passing Well, in third, proved he belongs at this level and is one to watch in future staying handicaps. My Silver Lining and Fortunedefortunata ran with credit to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, while Knockanore, despite finishing sixth, remains a horse of interest for upcoming assignments.

Bodhisattva, finishing seventh, showed promise but perhaps found the extended trip a stretch too far on the day.

Conclusion

The 2025 Midlands Grand National delivered another enthralling spectacle of endurance and determination. Mr Vango’s victory, a testament to his stamina and fighting spirit, was a richly deserved triumph for connections. With potential future targets including the Scottish Grand National, all eyes will be on this impressive staying chaser as he continues his career at the highest level.
