There’s a packed programme of sporting action in central Scotland this coming weekend and travel operator Scotrail has issued a travel warning for those intending to travel by rail to the Scottish Grand National on Saturday afternoon.
2024 Scottish Grand National
The 2024 Scottish Grand National gets underway at 3.35 pm on Saturday afternoon, however this isn’t the only big sporting event taking place in Scotland on that day. Indeed, while thousands will be flocking to Ayr Racecourse for the biggest horse race in Scotland, Hampden Park will also be full to bursting when Aberdeen and Celtic do battle in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup at 12.30pm.
Shuttle buses and extra trains
Ahead of these two events, train operator Scotrail have stated that there will be extra seats being offered as well as extra trains between Glasgow Central Station and Prestwick Town which is being used as the main station for Ayr due to the issues at the town’s main station. There will be a bus shuttle service running from the latter to Allison Street which is a small walk from the racecourse entrance and these shuttle buses will operate from 10am to 1pm as well as 5pm to 8.39pm.
Allow extra time
All rail passengers travelling to and from Ayr for the 2024 Scottish Grand National are being urged to purchase their train tickets in advance using the Scotrail app in order to avoid the anticipated lengthy queues at stations. This promises to be one of the busiest days of the year for Scotrail and those travelling to Ayr for the race meeting are also advised to allow extra time for their journey.
