Updated Weights for the 2025 Scottish Grand National
Can Mr Incredible Live Up to His Name in the Scottish Grand National?
Top weight Mr Incredible will carry the number one cloth into Saturday’s Coral Scottish Grand National at Ayr, but there’s no mistaking the fact he arrives with as many question marks as he does stone in the saddle.
The mercurial nine-year-old, now trained by Sandy Thomson, has become something of a cult figure for all the wrong reasons. Notoriously tricky at the start, he refused to race on his stable debut in the Rowland Meyrick on Boxing Day, and last year pulled himself up in the early stages of this very race after dawdling from the tapes.
Unreliable Behaviour
It’s been over a year since Mr Incredible managed to complete a race, with his last finish coming in the 2024 Midlands Grand National where he ran a gallant second. He was ruled out of the Aintree Grand National last weekend due to his unreliable behaviour, and while his talent is clear, backing him to carry 12st to victory at Ayr would be a leap of faith.
His former trainer, Willie Mullins, will be far better represented this time around. The Irish maestro sends five runners into battle as he looks to tighten his grip on the British trainers’ title following his dominant Aintree exploits. Chief among them is Macdermott, last year’s Scottish National hero, who returns off a 5lb higher mark of 142 and will carry 11st 6lbs.
Strongest British-trained Threat
Mullins also saddles Olympic Man, Captain Cody, Spanish Harlem, and ante-post favourite Chosen Witness. The latter, rated 137, remains winless over fences but has strong course form after winning over hurdles on this very card last year. He’ll carry 11st 1lb and bids to prove his chasing credentials on the biggest stage of his career so far.
Another notable contender is Henry’s Friend from the Ben Pauling stable. He ran a respectable race to finish eighth in the Ultima at Cheltenham last month and will shoulder 11st 8lbs on Saturday, making him second top weight behind Mr Incredible. The seven-year-old is seen by many as the strongest British-trained threat to the Mullins brigade.

With an open field, contrasting profiles, and storylines aplenty, this year’s Scottish Grand National has all the makings of a classic. The question is: can Mr Incredible finally deliver on his name—or will one of Mullins’ battalion, or a plucky British challenger, steal the headlines?
