Jonjo O’Neill’s hopes lie with Monbeg Genius at Ayr this weekend

The 2023 Coral Scottish Grand National gets underway on Saturday afternoon and Jonjo O’Neill inmate Monbeg Genius remains hugely popular in the betting after his third-place finish behind Aintree Grand National victor Corach Rambler in the Ultima Chase at Cheltenham last month.

Handler Jonjo O’Neill has tasted success in the majority of the big races throughout the UK but he has yet to win the Scottish Grand National, however he will be hopeful of putting this particular hoodoo to rest on Saturday afternoon.

Having run a decent third in the Ultima Chase at last month’s Cheltenham Festival behind Lucinda Russell’s Corach Rambler, seven-year-old Monbeg Genius is very high up the betting for the Scottish Grand National at general odds of 8/1 at the time of writing. The big unknown for the O’Neill runner will be the step-up in trip given that his furthest distance thus far was 3m 1f in his last outing. Having only had five career outings over fences thus far with three wins along the way, the likelihood is that he will have more to come.

Prior to his Cheltenham appearance last month, Monbeg Genius had won three on the trot and he will go into the Scottish Grand National with a leading chance.
